Canon Palmtronic LD-80 (Panther D)
Brief History
Canon was the first japanese manufacturer who announced a pocket-sized calculator, the Pocketronic. From then, Canon developed a series of LED-display calculators with integrated circuits made by its american partner, Texas Instruments. But the japanese VFD tube technology was breaks into the market in 1974, and because of low prices, excellent electric characteristics and optical features, the manufacturers quickly replaced the LED displays with these domestic products. So Canon introduced the first VFD calculator, the LD-80 with Texas Instruments’ IC in 1974. But after Hitachi started mass production of LSI chips, Canon redesigned this model with Hitachi’s circuit. Later the higher capacity and more complex calculators were developed, first with Texas parts, and later with japanese versions.
