Sharp EL-531

Brief History
Sharp’s first truly cheap, and internally simplified scientific calculator for the educational market (EL-530) was replaced by EL-531 in 1984. This new model has some improvements to achieve lower manufacturing costs: the flexible PCB was replaced by a new, specially-shaped chip made by Toshiba for direct contacts to the display and the keyboard. In addition to the EL-530, it has been capable for calculating statistics. The EL-531 was a great success, so a new model has been released from time to time.

In the US, this model was released as EL-530S. The EL-531 in the US was identical to the EL-531S, which was a redesigned calculator with the same functionality.
