Sharp EL-531P
Brief History
The biggest competitor, Casio continuously dominated the educational market with the fx-82 series of scientific calculators, so Sharp had to develop newer and newer variations of the EL-531 series. The two new member introduced in 1990 had some improvements compared to earlier models. The EL-531D mostly for US market, had smaller form factors due to use of smaller button cells, the EL-531P for the european distribution used AA-sized batteries. Internally, these models were identical: contains new liquid crystal displays with 10+2 digit capacity, and functions which earlier can be available on more expensive calculators, such hyperbolic, combination functions, or engineering notation. The interior construction was changed too: the machines were assembled in Thailand or Taiwan, uses two-sided printed circuit boards with displays connected with ribbon foil cables.
