General Instrument EZ3500

Brief History
Taking advantage of the high demand for calculators, semiconductor plant of General Instrument of Canada produced an increasing range of integrated circuits for various types of calculators, and in 1975 also started manufacturing complete pocket calculators. Unfortunately, the market has changed significantly in that time, so GI can not achieve a larger market share. Only a few models of the EZ series was produced. The manufacturing line was sold to the Soviet Union, where it was used to launch mass production of four-function pocket calculators.

The EZ3500 was the only scientific model. Although GI also manufactured and distributed more advanced circuits, it is interesting that they were not used to build calculators with these, although those might have been sold at a higher profit. Interestingly, Híradástechnika Szövetkezet (Telecommunication Co-operative) assembled a serie of EZ3500 in Hungary after Bowmar’s bankruptcy in 1975, and marketed as TK-891.
