Omron 88SR
Brief History
One of Omron's calculator with least successful design: the 88SR debuted in 1975. To see what they were able to get out of the same machine a year later, compare with the very elegant 10SR model. The most interesting feature of the machines is their operation: the exponent — similarly to some machines built with Rockwell circuits — is always visible, and the switch, which sets exponential or floating point modes, only switches the normalization of the mantissa on or off: in exponential mode, the absolute value of the mantissa is always a number between 1 and 9 (normal form), but in floating-point mode, numbers less than 10 million in absolute value are displayed without normalization — as on any other standard calculator. Apart from that, it is a well-usable, albeit now ridiculously accurate, scientific calculator that can calculate hyperbolic functions and their inverses, although the latter can only be invoked by pressing the hyp and arc keys in that order. The machine was imported to the United States by Marubeni Iida (Miida) with model number MC1000.
