Kokuyo KC-80N
Brief History
Sharp manufactured most of its own-brand calculators for Kokuyo, a Japanese stationery manufacturing and distribution company. The most interesting models were these with early liquid crystal displays built with Sharp's unique COS (Crystal on Substrate) technology, which has a flip-up cover to allow light to pass through and reflect on the silver digits on black background. The first model (Kokuyo KC-80L, Sharp EL-805) was built with five CMOS chips manufactured by Toshiba, completely built on the same glass plate as the display, while the later ones were made with a traditional printed circuit board. After the KC-80G (Sharp EL-807), a unique type appeared (KC-80N), which did not have Sharp counterpart, and can be operated from adapter and is built without a flip-up window. Due to cheaper costs, the necessary circuits were again integrated into a single PMOS chip, but the power consumption of the machine increased dramatically.
