EL-506P
Brief History
As a copy of Sharp’s highly successful EL-506H (1981) and its successor, the EL-506P (1984), a wide variety of clones and fakes have been made since the mid-1980s. What they have in common is that a functional copy of the EL-506P — which contains Samsung’s KS6041 “replacement circuit” of the original Sharp machine’s SC6992 IC — is placed in a housing very similar to the original EL-506H. One version of the clones is Yk587, of which an unbranded version is shown here. Its quality and operability fall short of the requirements: the metal plate that electrically connects the two button cells, which also presses them down, is held by a miniature screw that can no longer hold the batteries even after the second battery replacement. The conductive layer on the rubber keyboard wears out quickly, making it increasingly difficult to operate the keys.
