Langenscheidt Alpha 8 Englisch

Brief History
In 1981, Sharp introduced two pocket calculators combined with japanese-english dictionary, which have patented input methods for keying in the first two letters to select the specific words from the built-in 4500 (IQ-200) or 3000 (IQ-150) words dictionary. The machine which supported katakana characters for input and display, became very popular in Japan due to its relatively low price.

The german Langenscheidt publishing company, which was founded in 1856, helps people to learn foreign languages with its exercise books and dictionaries. They tried to employ all new technologies, so Sharp and Langenscheidt started a cooperative business to produce dictionaries for european market. The Alpha 8 was identical to the IQ-200, but has only english letter input. In 1983, the first models were introduced: german-english and german-french versions, and one year after three more were marketed: the spanish, italian and latin.
