Sharp EL-8148

Brief History
Abaci, or with japanese words, sorobans were widely used in Japan, especially in the 1960s and 1970s, which is a great, simple and quick tool, not only for adding and subtracting numbers, but for multiplying and dividing too. Sharp introduced the Sorokaru (Soro-Cal, ソロカル) EL-8148 in 1978, which is a traditional soroban with 19 digits (bamboo bars with wooden discs) and an electronic pocket calculator with liquid crystal display. The two calculator provide good comparison between the traditional method and the modern electronics for everyone, especially in the education. The later successor, EL-8048 (1979) made by plastic and has only 13 digit capacity, but were produced in large quantities in Japan and Korea. The last Soro-Cal model was the EL-429, which was the smallest in the series, and the electronic calculator part is operated with solar cells.
